Web / Design: A Novice’s Thoughts

Almost every novel I read makes me want to write, just as most cookbooks make me want to cook and many photography books inspire me to take photos. I have yet to come across any inspiring books on web design, though, and I suspect it’s because web designers don’t do as much pure design as the title implies. In other words, perhaps web design has failed to become an artistic medium and simply lacks the material to make an inspiring book.

So I wonder if web designers could become better designers if they emulated the Architect’s system of getting an engineer’s opinion only after his or her imagination has been inked on paper. That is, perhaps we should free ourselves from writing html and css as a profession. Such a strategy might have a better chance at reproducing the radical genius of Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry, if only because web designers could stop handicapping themselves with their fascination with code and the limitations code implies.

CreativeMornings Video: Zachary Lieberman

Our speaker at the October 30th, 2009 CreativeMornings was brilliant and much admired Zachary Lieberman. Zachary has a simple goal: he wants you surprised. He creates artwork that uses technology in a playful and seamless way to explore the nature of communication and the delicate boundary between the visible and the invisible.

(A big thank you to wonderful Roland Lazarte for filming and editing Zach’s Talk.)

CreativeMornings with Matias Corea at ADC

matiascorea

Ready for another CreativeMorning?

Our speaker on November 20th 2009, is Matias Corea, Chief Designer at Behance, an innovative company dedicated to organizing the creative world to make ideas happen. As the company’s founding designer, he has shaped the brand identity and design of all Behance products, including the Behance Creative Network, the 99% conference, and Action Method.

Born and raised in Barcelona, Matias received his BFA in Graphic Design from Massana Art School. While in school, Matias had the opportunity to work at his father’s architecture studio space and develop his secondary passion. This love of architecture influenced him immensely and brought an inherent order to his work. Finally, his geeky passion for organizing information found its home at Behance. There, Matias developed his skills as a web designer, with no prior web experience – relying solely on basic design principles, an obsession with structure, and common sense.

How incredibly cool is this MeasureMe Stick that transforms the traditional ruler into a playful, modern growth chart. Pretty! In fact, this would not only be cool for Ella’s room but in our living-room in general. We could add all our friends that stop by.

Eternal Helium Ballon

How crazy cool are these Eternal Helium Balloons? (Love the cloud!)

They are entirely made of fabric and there is in fact no helium in them. They are stuffed with kapok, and feel like a soft pillow. A tiny flap fixed at the top allows mounting it to your ceiling. It is key to hang them up as high as possible, in order to recreate the magic illusion of a real flying helium balloon! The most beautiful effect is obtained in setting a bunch of balloons together, forming a “balloon bouquet”. All these pieces are delicately handmade in my own workshop in Paris, in limited edition.

My first PrintSociety purchase

ampersand

I am thrilled about my first PrintSociety purchase: The amazing Ampersand Print by Conor & David. Make sure to watch the making of video. Did you know: The ampersand was first seen in the 1st century AD and this short text in Irish and English charts its history and role in the English language.

Michael has an interesting post about Twitter Lists in which I learned about MustExist.com/list_tags. Enter your twitter name see the names of Twitter lists associated with your account. Here’s mine about swissmiss. Some of the tags that made me laugh are designhappy, beasts_of_twitter, mayo (?) and webrockers.

What are some of yours that made you chuckle?

Print Society is a brand new site and already an amazing place to find art you can actually buy. If you’re an artist Print Society offers a unique opportunity to get the word out about about your art and sell prints faster. Some fantastic artists are already on board and from what I can tell the potential is huge! The amazing, lovely Laura Holder is their first front page curator!

(Congrats Saha, another fantastic idea and execution!)
