I was a graphic design major in college but am currently working in the the print industry. I hate getting these requests and its even harder to say no because it is not my profession and I don't normally charge when I do mini projects for friends and family. It is extremely frustrating when some how I am expected to do the save the dates for a co-workers daughter's friends who is getting married. REALLY!?! How did I get roped into this. And of course I am given no direction and manage to come up with something pretty awesome and then they want a thousand changes! UGH I hate people that don't recognize the value of other people time.

I agree with Artemis and was recently speaking to a friend about these pro bono projects- our skills of service are considered inferior.

If a friend opens a clothing store, restaurant or is an actor I don't ask them for hundreds of dollars of free clothes, free meals or to memorize a play to put on a one man show for me. I support them by eating and paying for a meal and/or clothes. If they offered I might accept, but I find it very nervy when someone devalues my time and thinks its just a simple 1-2-3- task to whip up a an entire website! For close friends and family I can do these major favors because I know they would help me in return, but when acquaintances start asking for things atop my other projects it gets stressful.

In the end I always send an invoice showing the money I saved them and the valuable time spent on their project, maybe then they can start to respect the field and hard work put into our services.

But, the worst happens when you do the favor and..... they don’t like the result. So they come with that sorry face, saying they will think about it and call later.

Oh make me laugh, so everyone else is having a holiday season like the one in our household. With two designers residing here, its been a constant list of favors for people and clients for the holidays. Sigh...

So annoyingly true.... I think the main issue here is the fact that our profession/vocation/field is considered, by many, inferior to other jobs, at least where I come from...

I get the "favor" thing a lot... and sometimes it's a flipping struggle to say "no"...

As well as being funny, this poster is actually really well designed!

I've seen this style before, can't quite put my finger on it though!

Some of the favours on it are great - "Last minute powerpoint for a client who will not pay you"!

Great.

Small posters announcing a stationery store's changing hours of operation, for an aunt. Or the hair salon that asks for the design of a simple postcard/mailer, which ultimately snowballs into a poster, a half-page magazine ad and a special offer for website. A friend's band. Always a friend's band...

I've been a victim of so many of these! Here's one to add – gig poster for a band that won't pay you (no surprise) but then wants to split all profits made at the show 50/50.

- shopping cart for a friend's t-shirt company that doesn't make any money
- illustration "that should not take more than 5 mins" for a friends little league award
- "just a couple tweaks" to a full page new paper ad that totally changes the layout, which you already did for free
- typesetting job for a book that "will sell millions and you can be a part of it"
