The Oldest Living Things in the World

I have posted about Rachel Sussman’s Oldest Living Things project before and she just sent me the latest addition: the 2,000-year-old brain coral that she photographed underwater in Toabgo last month. Spooky and fascinating at the same time!

  1. Please, do NOT let me be reincarnated as brain coral.

  2. I agree with Rachel’s surprise at the scale, having been near this enormous coral twice in my life, it was still surprising the second time.

There is an interesting commentary on life with it as well, as fish have eaten away almost half of the volume of the coral, while it keeps growing year after year as well.
