This is mentioned in one of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House books, I think it was done competitively in the late 19th century, like Spelling Bees.

This looks like dependency parsing (dependency grammar) in modern NLP.

oh my gosh, this just made all of my 8th grade memories come flooding back. We used to have to do this as late as 1994! I absolutely hated it and never understood it – which makes me laugh now because I’m a book editor.

I spent so much time in 7th grade language arts doing this. (1998) I actually oddly enjoyed it and I think it has helped (a little) with my grammar skills.
