“I’ve been all over the world and I’ve never seen a statue of a critic.”
― Leonard Bernstein
i leave in berlin, a city with at least two statues of karl marx. dublin has a statue of oscar wilde. i am pretty sure there is more.
mr bernstein, you only see what you are looking for.
David Ogilvy liked to say,
“Search all the parks in all your cities,
You’ll find no statues of committees.”
Thank you i am pretty sure there is more.
One of my favorites:
“Critics build nothing.”
– Robert Moses
There are many critics who make useful contributions to culture and appreciation of art forms. Roger Ebert, for example, seemed to be highly regarded as a film citric and was widely mourned. Maybe it is wise not to trash all critics because we have come across of hostile one any more than we would wish to dismiss all graphic artists because we see some awful design.
