Stand-Up Desk (IKEA Hack)

A Stand-up Desk (Ikea hack)standup-desk

The utterly brilliant Kelli Anderson built this good looking (!) convertible stand-up IKEA hack desk with help from metalsmith-extraordinaire Dustin John and Daniel Dunnam. The minimalist convertible standing-sitting desk/storage unit is made from Ikea cabinets, a top from Lowe’s and a linear actuator.

This is the first standing desk I’ve seen that I would let enter my studio. Well done Kelli!

  1. I don’t blame you one bit for being so picky—I have severe tennis elbow that has been much alleviated by my sit-stand GeekDesk, but I can’t deny that it’s an eyesore. I’m not a professional designer, but I still hate spending money on ugly things.

This is a fantastic hack, and it provides some inspiration for how I might go about concealing the ugliness of my own desk’s undercarriage when I get creative enough. :)

  2. Tina, is my slap-dash Ikea hack not good enough for ya? I wrote a blog post about it recently: http://d.pr/537E

  3. But yes, I think adjustable is the way to go. For my next desk, I will definitely go with adjustable either hand-crank of mechanized. Just need to get in good with some metalsmiths and find myself a proper shop somewhere in NYC.

  4. This is genius! I wish I could do something like this with my desk.

  5. Wow, thanks guys!

Prescott, the only piece that you wouldn’t be able to DIY at home is that the raising/lowering cradle part. There are 2 lengths of pipe and some welding needed (in addition to the woodworking on the “drawer slide” routed tracks.) I’d email Dustin (madeinchinatown.com) and see if he can help you out and/or point you to a similar small shop.

Also- there may be a more pre-fabricated solution to this piece, but I was unable to find it. Hopefully someone can streamline and evolve the design to be 100% DIY. I’ll certainly update the post with any promising modifications/variations that come out of this.

  6. Wow. Nice looking solution. Really well done. Even if it’s not all DIY. I’d love to have a desk like this.
