With due respect to the quoted pantmakers, this is a misconception which has become an urban legend. It’s true there are anecdotes about this or that (amateur) aerodynamicist at a cocktail party doing some simple math with simplified data and equations and declaring that bumblebees /shouldn’t/ be able to fly. However, when the aerodynamicist consulted is an expert in animal mechanics, they quickly point out that the matter is far more complex, and that accurate calculations taking all variables and applicable principles into effect do in fact support bumblebee flight.
The takeaway? It’s a cute story, but having been a Swiss Miss reader for years, I get the impression you’re the kind of person that prefers accurate information to cute anecdotes.
