The Era of Blind Faith in Data Must End

“Algorithms don’t make things fair. They repeat our past practices, our patterns. They automate the status quo.”

Interesting and timely talk by Cathy O’Neil, a data skeptic.

  1. I think it might be worth adding that – in general – blind faith, not good. Blind faith that technology offers salvation somehow beyond humans treating other humans better – naive. I think what’s most interesting right now is the collision of those believing that ‘machine learning’ and algorithms are a stepping stone to understanding the human brain, and the growing evidence/research that points out we know less than we thought about even basic things like language and memory. I enjoy your blog. One of the last ones I still sit regularly.
