CreativeMornings Video: Zach Klein and Casey Pugh

12/12/08 Zach Klein and Casey Pugh on Physical Computing from CreativeMornings on Vimeo.

Horray we have a movie of last week’s CreativeMornings with Zach Klein and Casey Pugh! Thanks to Roland Lazarte, a freshman at NYU, you can now enjoy the talk at home. Thank you Rolo!

We will try our best to keep the filming of these talks up. I know many of you are interested in seeing them. Roland is not going to be around on January 9th, when our next CreativeMorning is happening (announcement will be coming shortly). Do you know anyone that might take Rolo’s place that day?

Today’s CreativeMornings was a success. Hosted in the amazing MEET space in SOHO and sponsored by the fantastic Behance with a presentation from the truly awesome Zach Klein and Casey Pugh. Today’s talk was about physical computing. What’s that? Check out the page they made – 10minchat.com – to learn a bit more about the technical stuff they were talking about. Part of what’s helping physical computing emerge more is Arduino, an open-source electronics prototyping platform. Zach and Casey showed some simple circuit controls using LED Lights and Arduino, and then demoed a Daft Punk helmet with super cool flashing messages. They went one step beyond that and showed a flash interface they had written, where what you drew on the computer was transmitted to the LEDs on the helmet. Physical and digital interacting in real time. The whole thing really highlights the potential for potential collaborations between artists, designers and engineers.

Check out some pictures of the talk here. Did you participate and take pictures? Please consider adding them to the CreativeMornings Flickr Pool. And we will upload a video of the talk next week. Roland Lazarte, a freshman at NYU is volunteering his time and expertise and is filming the talks. A big thank you also to our Virtual Skype Guest Rodrigo Bernardo Pimentel from São Paulo, Brazil.

YAY!

question for my readers

We are looking for someone to help us record/film the CreativeMornings Talks to put them on the web and make them available to swissmiss readers. Are you a film student and interested in teaming up with us? Or are you a designer that knows a lot about filming, editing and would get a kick out of helping us? If so, please email us and tell us a little bit about you.

CreativeMornings: Zach Klein and Casey Pugh on Physical Computing

Eventfull

Carl and I are thrilled to announce our next CreativeMorning which will take place in the *fantastic* MEET space in Soho, on December 12th, 2008.

Zach Klein, co-founder of Vimeo, and Casey Pugh, Senior Developer at Vimeo, will give a 10minute talk and introduce physical computing with simple demonstrations using Arduino, an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

The event opens up at 8:30am with the 10 minute talk starting at 9:00am, following a 20 minute disussion. Interested in attending? Make sure to r.s.v.p via email as there is only limited space available. Please tell us your name and what industry you’re in. We’re sorry but the event is full!

A big thank you to Marc and Sara Schiller of Electric Artists for hosting the event at MEET, an impressive storefront apartment-like space in the middle of Soho. When meeting with them and talking about the possiblity of hosting a CreativeMorning, Marc and Sara explained that they realized there was a need for a dedicated space in New York where creative and business executives could gather to re-imageine a business, re-invent a product or pitch potential clients. MEET was born and just recently opened their doors, and is now available to rent out for events. Check out the images on their site, the space is fantastic!

CreativeMornings? ‘CreativeMornings’ is a monthly morning gathering of creative types. Each event includes a 10 minute lecture, followed by a 20 minute group discussion. The gathering begins at 8:30am with the topic presentation starting at 9:00am. The whole thing closes down at 10am. The events are hosted at studios/gallery spaces in NYC. (We are always looking for potential hosts that are willing to accomodate 50+ people. Please email us if you’re interested in hosting or sponsoring one of our events!)

CreativeMornings at VII

The most recent ‘CreativeMorning‘ was a big success! (Pictures of the event can be seen here.) Thanks everyone for coming out. We had a great turn-out and enjoyed bagels and coffee sponsored by Iridesco, the creators of Harvest, a web-based time-tracking and invoicing application and Co-op. We also enjoyed water supplied by Tap’d NY. Special thanks also to our hosts and presenters, VII.
A big thumbs up to our virtual guest for the event, Pablo Puga from Mexico City

Our presenters were David Lukens (VII Archivist & independent photographer) and Alina Grosman (VII Head of Sales) who talked for a bit about how VII is not only finding new value in their work but also work to capture more material (audio and video as well as photography) when on assignment. Based on some the questions in the discussion it definitely seems that print photography is now a special assignment with digital “film” being the standard. Especially interesting was commentary that perhaps “middle of the road” professional photographers would be pushed out of business leaving only an ever expanding bottom tier and elites.

Given the discussion that came up, Comments Are Open. If you were at the presentation and have something to say, feel free to leave your remarks here.

Mark your calendars, our next CreativeMornings will be on December 12th! A more official announcement is forthcoming.

Tomorrow: ‘Creative Mornings”, Hosted by VII

Creativemorning_november

Carl and I are excited about tomorrow’s CreativeMorning hosted by VII, here in DUMBO.

Unfortunately, Stephen Mayes (VII Managing Director) is no longer able to present but David Lukens (VII Archivist & independent photographer) and Alina Grosman (VII Head of Sales) will be stepping in for him. The topic stays the same:

“Today’s culture puts a low price on intellectual property: photos, music, movies, etc are all getting cheaper (and even free). Authors and creatives of all types need to be inventive about finding new value in their work, and about monetizing that value.”

The location is at VII’s fantastic storefront space at 28 Jay Street, Brooklyn NY 11201 in DUMBO. Closest subway would be the York Street F Stop. Event opens up at 8:30am with the topic discussion starting at 9:00am.

We had a few cancelations which means we have room for 10 more. Send us an email if you’d like to join us tomorrow. Tell us your name and what industry you’re in.

Breakfast will be sponsored by Iridesco, the creators of Harvest, a web-based time-tracking and invoicing application and Co-op, a casual communication tool to help small teams work together better. Both of these apps have played a key role in helping creative businesses stay organized and work efficiently.

Carl and I are thrilled to announce our next ‘Creative Mornings‘ which will be Friday November 14th hosted by VII, a 11 member photo agency specializing in conflict photography.

Stephen Mayes, MD of VII Photo will give us a 10minute lecture on “Finding new value in photography“: Today’s culture puts a low price on intellectual property: photos, music, movies, etc are all getting cheaper (and even free). ‘creative morning’ october 10th, hosted by HUGE

Creativemorning_october_2

Our next ‘Creative Morning’ (previously called coffee+chat) will be Friday October 10th hosted by HUGE. The location is 45 Main St, Second Floor, Brooklyn NY 11201. Its in DUMBO easy to walk to from the High Street A stop or the York Street F Stop. Event opens up at 8:30am with the topic discussion starting at 9:00am. Make sure to r.s.v.p via email as there is only limited space available.

This months topic is “Unproduct” which is “a way for a maker of things to help add value to the things after they’ve been bought. An easy way to add serviceness and community to an object.” That definition comes from Russell Davies, the word is attributed to Matt Jones, and the idea was recently written about in Design Week. My co-host Carl Collins of HUGE will talk a bit about the idea and provide some more examples.

A big thank you to HUGE for hosting and sponsoring this month’s event. Contact me if you have a topic you’re passionate about and would like to present at an upcoming event or would like to host one of our ‘creative mornings’!

Come to our next friday morning meet up | September 19, 2008

Likemind_copy

I have been getting a lot of emails about when the next morning-coffee-get-together is going to happen… I finally have an answer: Next week! Please join me friday september 19, 2008, for a “Coffee and Chat” at swissmiss studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn. 8.30am – 10 am.

Email me to rs.v.p. (there’s limited space in our studio) and I’ll send you the exact address.

Coffee and munchies will be sponsored by Freshbooks, a billing service I personally use. Like so many of my designer friends, I used to spend way too much time writing my invoices and making sure that they look good. You can’t take the designer out of me, not even when it comes to sending an invoice. I know… I know…

Looking forward to seeing you! And again, make sure to r.s.v.p for directions. And by the way, that’s our view from our studio, it’s worth the trip, I promise!

UPDATE: We’ve reached our full capacity, sorry!
