2×4 Ring

If G and I would get married right now, I have a feeling he would go for this 2×4 ring as his wedding band. Designed by Brooklyn based Aaron Ruff, the ring is available in oxidized sterling, vermeil.

The I LEGO N.Y.. Board Book by Christoph Niemann will be my new favorite NYC Book Gift from now on. Absolutely brilliant and hilarious.

Triboro Design | Leftovers

Triboro Leftovers is a compilation of unpublished type treatments, photos, sketches, illustrations and logo explorations that we have created over the years. Rather than allow these to remain lost on our harddrives we decided to set them free. We mashed together elements from hundreds of different projects—and in the process—deliberately stripped the elements oftheir original context and meaning. The results are visual remixes which stand on their own.

Ride Rise Roar

Ride, Rise, Roar, is a David Byrne concert film by masterful Hillman Curtis that weaves intimate interviews with amazing concert footage. Hillman said he was drawn to this project initially because it involved one of his favorite musicians ever, David Byrne, and then because of the mixed genre performance concept. David had hired three New York choreographers to choreograph dances to songs, and then brought three modern dancers on the road along with a seven piece band. Hillman was interested in seeing how audiences would react to this wild combo. The result obviously was exhilarating… a real show.

Carry Hope

Print Magazine is currently running a project called “Carry Hope” where selected artists have designed tote bags and 100% of the profits will go to charity. They are now opening up the competition to the public and they will be featuring some of the design submissions in the magazine in addition to printing one of the designs from the public.

More info here. If you do participate, care to share a link to the design in a comment below?

Dear Mark Weaver…

… could you please print some more of these Self Portrait Screen Prints? It’s a pity they are sold out. Boo hoo.

Overcoming Creative Block

Alex of ISO50 asked some of today’s most exciting artists and creators what they do when the ideas aren’t flowing. He left the question fairly open ended and asked, What do you do to inspire your creativity when you find yourself in a rut? As expected, he was presented with an array of strategies, ranging from listening to Boards of Canada in a forest alone, to cooking up a storm (recipe provided) and waiting for the mind to clear: Overcoming Creative Block

Immaculate Perception

I am all for Surrealism, so it’s no surprise this Immaculate Perception collage by Matthew Rose gets my thumbs up.

Beautifully printed by Mariela Cadiz in Paris, this piece is a lullaby in the surrealist cannon: A young girl in a bob cut dreams in a dream of a lemon tree. She is the revolution, says the artist.

Featured Thank You

Last week I featured talented Mikey Burton and I just discovered this “Thank You Illustration” he did. Caption: I was featured on SwissMiss! In honor of the occasion, I drew a little self-portrait with some Swiss stuff (and a few clouds too). Thanks so much!

You are so welcome. And thank you for making me smile.

clouds are the new mustaches

Earlier today I was stating that clouds seem to be the new mustaches. I see clouds popping up *everywhere*. Here is Joe Bauldoff’s illustrated answer to that:

Made me smile.

Limited Edition Letterpress Drop Cap Prints

If you like my studio mate Jessica’s Daily Drop Cap and also love letterpress, then this brandnew limited edition print is a must have. Jessica brought one into the studio and it made me gasp! It is amazing! Jessica hand printed these two color letterpress posters at The Arm in Williamsburg and according to her stories it was The Most Painstaking Registration Process Ever. She actually ended up destroying her plates while trying to make it perfect, which means that this small first edition of 75 will also be the last edition. The prints are available trimmed or untrimmed from her store (she recommend trimmeds for mount framing and untrimmed for matte framing). They are printed on Crane’s 110lb Lettra and each is signed and numbered with the note “First and only edition”.

Dirt-Poster

1218poster2

Gasp for air — this is so amazing! As Sub-Studio explains the Dirt-Poster:

Designed by Roland Reiner Tiangco, Dirt Poster requires your participation to complete it. The back side of each poster is covered with a layer of ink, which you need to “paint” onto the front side the poster, to reveal the message that has been spot-varnished onto the paper. Awesome! The poster is limited edition and can be bought for $80.

The future belongs to the few of us still willing to get our hands dirty.

2010 Letterpress Wall Calendar

2010 calendar.il_430xN.99144391il_430xN.99144461

Beverly Hsu created this beauty of a minimal and slightly abstract 2010 letterpress wall calendar. The days of the month are represented by twleve different decorative types that she discovered from various typecases in the letterpress lab. Each decorative piece represents a day, each set of decorative elements represents a month, and all together, the twelve months of 2010. Lovely.

(thank you so much for the surprise, beverly)

Matthew Richmond and Thomas Romer, The Chopping Block (choppingblock.com, chopshopstore.com)

The Chopping Block opened its studio doors in 1996 with one ambition—“World Domination Through Graphic Design.” Today, their full-service graphic design firm uses this principle to inform every aspect of their projects. Whether creating identities, interactive, or print, their work has proven that intuitive, engaging design drives solutions and spans mediums. Yes, it takes years of dominating the world one design at a time to achieve this understanding. But their collaboration with clients, and deep knowledge of technology and the competitive landscape allows them to continue to conquer in an industry that is constantly evolving.
