swissmiss is about to get a major facelift, including a new identity, wich means, I am my own client.

I just had a lengthy meeting (aka inner dialgoue) with myself. I think it was a good one, but the client, and the designer are still confused. Both couldn’t make up their minds on which logo to pick. What do you think? 1 , 2 or 3?

You input (via comments below or via email) is appreciated and will be rewarded with extra special designer karma points.

UPDATE: Thank you so much for all your comments and suggestions. I admit, I didn’t expect such a flurry of feedback. Some of you even sent me mockups! (!!) I am sending lots of designer-karma points your way. And now, back to the drawing board, as I am completely confused. Ha!

Jerry Lamp

Zm_11851_3

The Jerry Lamp (2005) represents a new level in lighting flexibility – literally. Made from recyclable silicone, Jerry is soft and durable, able to be dropped, knocked or tipped over with little concern. The malleable hook shape means that Jerry can be used for virtually any application – hook it onto the headboard of the bed or off the side of a bookshelf, place it on a side table or counter. When lit, the nontoxic, hypoallergenic silicone will get warm to the touch, but not hot. That, combined with its virtual indestructibility, make it a safe and functional lamp to be used all over the house.

Retrofuturephones

“AT&T conducted experiments and demonstrations of a Picturephone product and service in the early 1960s, including at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. The demo unit was usually in a small oval cabinet on a swivel stand, intended to stand on a desk. Videophones, possibly AT&T units, were featured at Expo 67, an International World’s Fair held in Montreal, Canada in 1967. Several demonstration videophone units were available for the Fair-going public to try, who were permitted to make live video calls to recipient volunteers in the United States.

Picturephone was offered to the public in New York City and Washington DC in the early 1970s. The screen was larger than in the original demo units, approximately half a foot (15 cm) square in a roughly cubical cabinet. Picturephone booths were set up in Grand Central Station and elsewhere. With fanfare, Picturephones were installed in offices of Westinghouse and other progressive companies

AT&T sold the VideoPhone 2500 to the general public in 1992 to 1995 with prices starting at US$1500 and later US$1000.

How not to die! (related to a startup)

If you can just avoid dying, you get rich. That sounds like a joke, but it’s actually a pretty good description of what happens in a typical startup. It certainly describes what happened in Viaweb. We avoided dying till we got rich.

It was really close, too. When we were visiting Yahoo to talk about being acquired, we had to interrupt everything and borrow one of their conference rooms to talk down an investor who was about to back out of a new funding round we needed to stay alive. So even in the middle of getting rich we were fighting off the grim reaper.

Congratulations to Mister Wambach, who used to be one of my teachers at University of Applied Sciences in Munich, for wininng the Red Dot Design Award for his Artword Project:

»artword« – one makes two, that is the key to the basic principal, because the word “two” is already integrated within this artistic play on words. The play on words within words is, thereby, much more than a mere postcard collection. A philosophical thought is always behind topics such as human rights, politics, eroticism or wisdom. The artword collection that is kept within a practical box will inspire you to send off the 33 postcards: to your best friends, or even to your worst enemies. Due to the attractive appearance and distinctive design, the box is also an ideal gift for those who enjoy discovering their own interpretation, as well as for limbering up for the next lesson in English.

artword: »One box with 33 postcards, each of which reveals a double surprise.«

What Is Success?

Success is more than going to work every day and getting paid. Success means finding personal satisfaction in your work and loving what you do. And it means engaging with a social world: a world of clients and employers, but also of readers, users and other designers. It is those things that make us rich.

do parents matter?

Here is a sampling of other parental factors that matter and don’t:

Matters: The child has highly educated parents.
Doesn’t: The child regularly watches TV at home.
Matters: The child’s parents have high income.
Doesn’t: The child’s mother didn’t work between birth and kindergarten.
Matters: The child’s parents speak English in the home.
Doesn’t: The child’s parents regularly take him to museums.
Matters: The child’s mother was 30 or older at time of the child’s birth.
Doesn’t: The child attended Head Start.
Matters: The child’s parents are involved in the PTA.
Doesn’t: The child is regularly spanked at home.

The most interesting conclusion here is one that many modern parents may find disturbing: Parenting technique is highly overrated. When it comes to early test scores, it’s not so much what you do as a parent, it’s who you are.
