square balloon

I wish I could see this in person: An aluminium box filled with helium – so, basically, a square balloon. Thomas in Basel sent this to me and he wrote: A friend of mine worked with the artist Junya Ishigami (who’s getting a lot of attention in Japan nowadays). Apparently the box is starting to leak & drop down … ever soooo slowly. Oh my!

  1. Amazing… looks like a liquid-metal alien spaceship…

  2. who’s the artist? what’s his name?

  3. Reminds me of the lead balloon they made on the TV show “Mythbusters”. From extremely thin sheets of lead. But this aluminum one is much bigger and “prettier”. Really dramatic!

  4. That’s just cool! Too bad it’s so big so you can’t tell where the leak is while it’s still up in the air!

  5. it is warhol’s silver clouds on an enormous scale. very cool end result, it was almost impossible to even understand what it was at first, due to its mirrored surface and incredible size. fantastic.

  6. When I was in art school, a fellow student made an enormous silver mylar balloon and launched it as an art event one afternoon on campus. We watched it float serenely away, she photographed it, and that was that.

Several months later she was in traffic court to contest a ticket, and while waiting for her case to come up she listened to some poor man tell the story of how he was just driving along and an enormous silver thing floated down onto the road in front of him, causing him to hit a fire hydrant. By the time the police arrived, it was gone. Apparently he was in court to protest paying for the hydrant repair.
