icarus

Icarusbig

“Through experimentation with cutting paper to create a three dimensional form for a light, we discovered a structure with overlapping feather shapes that resembled a swan’s wing. We made the form a-symmetrical to emphasise this and to make it very dynamic. As the light appears as a wing circling a light, the name Icarus seemed an appropriate reference.” Tord Boontje

Lovely, no? Icarus Lamp.

My neighbor Lori (very talented designer) is one of the masterminds behind Curliegirl. They just came out with a lovely line of adorable baby wool hats. I am a fan of their wool hats for adults, like the one pictured above. See for yourself: Curliegirl!

signature vase

800_152_signature_vase_3

“These vases are the ultimate personalization of the consumer in a product, with minimal intervention of the designer. When you buy a signature vase you don’t get a ready made vase. Your personal signature is scanned and transformed into a unique vase, produced using stereolithography.”

I am *drooling* over these fabulous signature vases. I really, really, really want one.

apple’s unusual advertising

NanowallAs part of Apple’s rather unique advertising campaign, huge iPod nano posters now adorn the platform walls of Toyoko Line Shibuya Station. As you depart the train you’ll be faced with a stream after stream of 1:1 iPod nano cutouts, in which you can pull off and take home….

Ringsbig

I am fascinated by this ring, designed by Brooklyn based designer Peter D’Aquino. This ring would be a wonderfully smart solution for a traditional engagement/wedding ring in Switzerland. Unlike here in the US, when you get engaged in Switzerland, you first have a silver band which you then exchange with a gold band, when you get married. With this ring, you would still be wearing the silver band, hidden in the wedding band. How wonderfully poetic.

ufocap umbrella

UfocapI went to see the current exhibit at MoMA called SAFE Design Takes On Risk where I discovered the: Ufocap Umbrella (What a hysterical name!)! It’s designed by Jae Bong Yang, Made out of PVC Plastic, manufactured by Koryo Industrial Co. Korea

I wish they would offer one for grown ups (No offense Umbrellaman). Seriously, I would wear it.

Here’s the Folding Instructions. Sorry, but it looks like a giant condom…

sewn house

Suh_header2_im_1

This made me look: The childhood home of Korean artist Do-ho Suh, sewn in nylon. It’s an exhibit from two years ago, in Providence, Rhode Island.

His immigration to the U.S. produced a disorientation that the artist describes as “transcultural displacement,” a feeling of being neither here nor there. “I don’t really get homesick, but I’ve noticed that I have a longing for this particular space and I want to recreate that space or bring that space wherever I go.”

eva solo

Evasolo_1
I am a big admirer of Eva Solo Designs. The CafeSolo CoffeeMaker just puts a smile on my face, especially now, that fall/winter is approaching. If I was a coffee maker, this is what I would want to look like.

EvasolositeI not only love the EvaSolo products but also the simple, clean site. I am highly impressed by the thorough product sheets. The one for the CafeSolo Coffee Maker even tells you about the history and production process of coffee! Yay to the overall brand of Eva Solo!

The pictured coffee maker was designed by Claus Jensen and Henrik Holbaek, founders of Tools.

Oh my, I would *love* to see one of these collages in my apartment. Have a look at some of his work here.
