enthusiasm

“Enthusiasm is that secret and harmonious spirit which hovers over the production of genius, throwing the reader of a book, or the spectator of a statue, into the very ideal presence whence these works have really originated. A great work always leaves us in a state of musing.”

– Isaac D’Israeli

making off

Some of you might have seen my prior entry about the ‘Sony bouncy ball commercial’. Here are some ‘making off’ clips.

How we did it

In an age when CGI is commonplace, this makes the commercial all the more extraordinary. Every single frame was shot over two days – with the main sequence involving a 23-man camera crew and only one chance to get it right.

An entire block was closed off and special compressed-air cannons shot the balls into the air, while earth moving equipment poured thousands down the street. Not that you’d know it from the finished product, but these balls can do some damage, so all the cars were props and crew members went so far as to having protective shields and crash helmets.

But when you get it right, you get it right. The goal at the beginning was to deliver a “really simple, visual celebration of colour”. We think you’ll agree the results speak for themselves.

So, this morning, I saw a guy working his bible with a bright yellow highlighter. Not that I am an overly religious person, but that just seemed wrong to me. Outch!

recycling made fun.

Recycling

I love this concept of making ‘recycling fun for kids’ at the Migros (swiss supermarket) in St.Gallen Switzerland. I was bummed I didn’t have any empty cans or paper with me.

bye bye fresh air.

I got back from the swiss alps last night. It was fabulous to spend quality time with my family and friends. I think I broke my personal record in eating just cheese/roesti/bread/sausages and hot chestnuts for a week straight.

It’s amazing how I morph into a tourist when being ‘home’. (Home? Hmmm… What do I call home at this point anyway? I am sure all expatriates agree with me that ‘home’ becomes a blurry term once you’ve lived away from your roots for a few years.)

I catch myself noticing things that are seemingly ‘normal’ to my family and friends eyes. One of my favorite things to do is hitting the local supermarkets. I can litteraly spend hours in there and observe the products, people and packagings. (It’s amazing how the swiss consumer brings his own shopping bag. Kudos! I like that!)

I always come back thinking that the overall standard of living is so incredibly high out there. The apartments seem like palaces to me and everything’s groomed, renovated, clean and ‘seemingly perfect’. What a change to get back into a cab in NYC, dealing with a grumpy cabdriver and driving down Atlantic Avenue, seeing rundown houses, self made signs and broken lights. It usually puts a grin on my face.

I embrace the imperfectness of NYC.
I love the duality of my life.

bye bye

G and I are heading to the swiss alps tonight. YAY!

There will be no postings for about a week.
I apologize!

Have a good week!

red studio

RedstudioRed Studio was originally launched in the spring of 2004. This year, in conjunction with the addition of new features and activities, and in response to a visitor evaluation study conducted last summer, MoMA redesigned the “umbrella” site and added an interview with the artist Shahzia Sikhander (conducted by a group of teens), a collage activity, and a bulletin board for visitors to send in responses to posted questions. Upcoming additions include interviews with the curators Joachim Pissarro and Paola Antonelli. The project has been the result of a close collaboration between the Digital Media and Education Departments at The Museum of Modern Art.

pro digital photographer’s handbook

Pro_digitalKevin is pointing out a book called Pro Digital Photographer’s Handbook on his Cool Tools blog. Read his review, sounds promising. I’ll make sure to pick up a copy.

quote by paul rand

”The endless conflicts between the spiritual and material, between ends and means, form and content, form and function, form and facture, form and purpose, form and meaning, form and idea, form and expression, form and illusion, form and habit, form and skill, form and style need to be resolved.

It is the merging of these conflicts that determines the aesthetic quality of a painting, a design, a building, a sculpture, or a printed piece.

A work of art, then, is the resolution of conflicting relations. It is a unity of opposites, a series of steps reflecting Hegel’s dialectics: thesis, the subject; antithesis, the conflict; and synthesis, the resolution.

Whatever one’s beliefs, art is commentary, art is revelation, art is the culmination of the creative process. It is a by-product, not a goal, a point of view about a particular object that rises above its topical source. It is not just a facsimile but an opinion expressed visually in a distinctive way.

Art is reality enhanced.”

Paul Rand – From Lascaux to Brooklyn
