Haven’t seen this, but I saw the catalog from a similar exhbition at the Noguchi. Wonderful stuff. And even aside from playability, chess sets have huge potential as a decor element; designers have long used the board as a springboard for variations on the basic shapes, and the duotone scheme adds a touch of class anywhere, whether it’s the classic black and white or an alabaster and red. I love that the set is one of those items for use that inspire generation after generation of artists and designers to craft their own variations. Always different, always the same.
