enormously insignificant

“You are 1 person out of 7 billion people
On 1 planet out of 8 planets
In 1 star system out of 100 billion star systems
In 1 galaxy out of 100 billion galaxies
And you are enormously insignificant.”

  1. Strangely, I’d prefer to think of it this way. If one person finds value in you, then they have basically prioritized you above every other wonder in the universe. In that way, you are enormously significant.

  2. That’s…kind of depressing…

  3. I still say 9 planets no matter what anybody else says.

  4. Out of 100 billion galaxies, existing in 100 billion star systems,
Out of 7 billion people, you have your own unique genetic makeup,
    your thumbprint is yours alone,
you can create art, or write a song
and are depended upon by others that love you
    you are enormously significant.

  5. Or incredibly lucky :)

We won the probability lotto by getting to exist. I think that is kind of awesome.

  6. The last line could be changed to:

So what are you all stressed about?

  7. A lot of people understand that quote as a personal offense to their “uniqueness” and self-importance, which to me proves the need such a quote to be shared. The underlying meaning of those words is one – “Humble yourself!” No, you are not that important to subdue the world to your own needs or desires. You are juts a cog in the grand mechanism of life and if you, through your art or songs, or etc, can make a difference and be a “good” cog, then let it be. But don’t forget what you really are and put yourself above God!

  8. I like this. Makes it all the more miraculous that you (and I) exist at all!

  9. Although I conquer all the earth,
For me there is only one city.
In that city there is for me only one house,
And in that house, one room.
And in that room, a bed.
    And one woman sleeps there,
The shining joy and jewel of all my kingdom.

    –Ancient Sanskrit poem

  10. this reminds me of monty pythons:

  11. “If you’re one in a million, there are 8 of you in New York.”

  12. Not so insignificant if it is addressed to me! I mean, out of all those 7 billion people, it was addressed to me!!

  13. I like this because it lets off pressure of how great we’re all ‘supposed’ to be. Make mistakes. Live happy. Don’t worry. The world doesn’t depend on one person alone. I am grateful for this.
