Being a Geek

“Being a geek is all about your own personal level of enthusiasm, not how your level of enthusiasm measures up to others. If you like something so much that a casual mention of it makes your whole being light up like a halogen lamp, if hearing a stranger fondly mention your favorite book or game is instant grounds for friendship, if you have ever found yourself bouncing out of your chair because something you learned blew your mind so hard that you physically could not contain yourself — you are a geek.”

The Mary Sue defines what it means to be a geek

  1. “…because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”

  2. OMG YES! in total agreement.

  3. What…does that make me a geek…if I like, love, get overly excited about beautiful stuff? I just wrote about that, but didn’t think I could be promoted to geek status…nah, I think I’m getting delusional now. I couldn’t possibly masquerade as a geek….

  4. Yes! So true! Thanks!

  5. I guess that makes me a geek then! Damn!

  6. Just true. Geek passion here.

  7. Doesn’t geek generally mean you are enthusiastic about a non-socially popular topic, like math? No one seems to call Superbowl attendees football geeks.

  8. That’s the point – but the center of the definition is the passion you have about the topic. Why can’t superbowlers be called bowlgeeks?

  9. I know a chimney geek. He gets excited about everything about chimneys, bricks, masonry, fire, fire safety, thermodynamics, etc. He is such a chimney geek that he once went through an entire training course for boiler maintenance/repair just to get a deeper understanding on their knowledge so he can do his job better.

  10. So the only way not to be a geek is to be a hipster? Because they don’t get excited about anything :)

  11. Blessed are the geeks, for they will inherit the earth.
