  1. and when exactly were we brainwashed into believing that everyone can have the opportunity not to have a job?
why is the new bourgeois (neoliberal) american dream the ideal that everyone can be an entrepreneur and a one-person-business? (and if they aren’t, it’s because they’ve failed somewhere down the line).

i would suggest watching the documentary “the century of the self” by adam curtis, as i think it offers a magnificent view to understand this current state of affairs, as it offers an explanation for the birth of the ultra-individualistic contemporary self that came to influence this sort of vision.

  2. My interpretation is if you love what you do it’s not a job, it’s an extension of life.

Never permit a dichotomy to rule your life, a dichotomy in which you hate what you do so you can have pleasure in your spare time. Look for a situation in which your work will give you as much happiness as your spare time.

  3. @tiago belo: totally agree. it really is kind of an arrogant view.

  4. @tiago – on one hand you are right.

On the other it is written “the best way”. There are unhappy people with the job that are too afraid to step out despite their entrepreneurial potential.

  5. Let me add myself to the choir of skeptics and another recommendation: “Status Anxiety” by de Botton puts the current belief in meritocracy and entrepreneurship into perspective.

  6. I think it requires a broad interpretation.

I do work for and with other people, and collect a paycheque for my efforts. It hasn’t felt like a job in years, it’s tons of fun!
