Thank you Brick

Feeling more protective than ever of where my attention goes. Brick is currently helping me stay off “the apps”.

Feeling disappointed about the state of the internet these days, those damn algorithms have really killed the magic for me. Want to make a real effort to bring this (slightly neglected) space back and visit other carefully tended online gardens. Where do you find inspiration these days, online, other than the big social media giants? And what do you do to avoid scrolling hours on end?

  1. we love this garden thanks for tending it throughout all sorts of seasons

  2. We love ur garden, Tina ❤️

  3. I keep a favorite list updated on my browser, and tend do visit old favorites as well, to see what’s up. And Pinterest, less nice, but I alawys track to the original website

  4. Your garden has been a beacon of light staying away from the current internet practices and algorithms. I’ve jumped shift from every single major platform, and surpassed the FMO.

I currently use BlueSky once a week for 15 minutes tops and always from a browser. I’m not actively limiting screen time, but because I haven’t been feeding the habit; I loose interest quickly, and I’ve regained a lot of time and freedom to read and get inspiration from “the real world”.

It’s weird, but the internet is not the only place to be. In its current state, demanding, toxic, requiring sacred maintenance and built for the sake of pleasing viewers to look relevant, our identity and personality has been shattered. Not even our actual jobs require that much from us.

On the internet, I can only recommend The Internet Archive, The Marginalian and the Public Domain Review.

Smile. Even when this garden is being maintained occasionally, it’s a honest glimpse of the things that matter to you and that’s awesome, to be genuinely interested in things. There’s no need to validate every potential viewer’s need for this place to be a great place to be.

  5. Your garden brings me joy!

I still love Pinterest, and I think you’d enjoy Wikitok for silly scrolling. I got off instagram about 2 years ago and it’s such a relief, but I do enjoy YouTube shorts for a “phone snack” now and then, and subscribing to as many niche newsletters as possible.

  6. You are one of my gardens!
I love returning to some of the “original” bloggers who are still around – cupofjo, kottke, you, smitten kitchen, colossal, tksst
And lots of newsletters for curated content

  7. sublime.app has been the antidote to doomscrolling… i put in a thought or idea and it takes me down a delightful rabbithole of related ideas.

other than that, i continue to love personal blogs and sites like yours. pls keep doing this!
