After discovering that kissing got introduced to the Japanese by Dutch tradesmen of the East Indies Companies, the subject for a Japan-series was evident. The graphic shape of the mouth runs through the series and by turning the pages of the magazine, the mouths “kiss”.

ever considered building a windmill?

When he was just 14 years old, Malawian inventor William Kamkwamba built his family an electricity-generating windmill from spare parts, working from rough plans he found in a library book. In conversation with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Kamkwamba, now 19, tells a moving story of ingenuity and adaptation, and shares his dreams for the future. This talk inspired outpourings of support from the TED community and in the blogosphere.

‘average rainfall in the UK’ poster

2639

David of UK based design company Accept & Proceed pointed me to their fabulous A1 hand printed diagrams, the latest being a graphic diagram that charts average rainfall in the UK between 1971-2000. As you can see on the image above, the graph itself is styled to look a little like a downpour of rain. The bars are plotted directly over the weather station’s that they related to, which also gives an abstracted map of the UK.

This (and other amazing) posters are available through Blanka

Architects Takaharu and Yui Tezuka joined forces with Kashiwa Sato, one of Toyko’s most respected creative directors to build, and brand, a novel kind of kindergarten in Tachikawa, a suburban area of Tokyo. Monocle’s Asian Bureau Chief Fiona Wilson reports on the Roof House concept. Watch the movie! This is fantastic!

volume 1 | a book by Raylene R. Gorum

67300d51c59894001cc6e91bdf499b7507e

I have been a big fan of Raylene R. Gorum’s sketchbooks for quite a while now. So much, that I asked her if she had prints for sale. We ended up doing a swap: a swissmiss print for a sketchbook print. I was obviously delighted to discover that she has come out with a book featuring some of her earlier sketchbooks:

A book within a book, culled from five years of sketchbooking. All works siphoned from the world around Raylene; a manner of dialoguing with art exhibits, books, fossils, architecture templates, food wrappers, RV culture, love, cats, photography, sake, childbirth, cities, graphics, origami, tape, people on the street and landscape.

‘How To See’ by George Nelson

F_47551

George Nelson is one of the most important designers and thinkers of the 20th century, and equally a gifted writer. This year DWR has republished his influential classic book, How To See, which originally came out in 1977. The book has been updated in color, with a new graphic layout by Chris Pullman, who managed Nelson’s graphic design office in the 70sand is currently Vice President of Design at WGBH. How To See is a collection of over 50 chapter-long essays, illustrated with hundreds of startling photographs, mostly from Nelson’s personal archives, and a preface by DWR founder Rob Forbes, who was project director for this re-edition.

The text, as well as the photographs, are insightful, inspiring, provocative and entertaining and will be appreciated by students and design buffs alike. DWR considers it to be perhaps the best $30 investment one could make towards a design education.

How to See is a limited edition, available exclusively at Design Within Reach.

About_psst

The mission of PSST is to produce original short films through the collaboration of different teams of designers, directors, and animators. Each film is comprised of three sections produced by three different teams. “Super*Nature” is an art exploration in finding the simplicity & purity of nature forms. How nature can be infinitely simple and simple enough to give us new kind of experiences and thoughts that will reflect in this whole discovery.

“Super*Nature” is by New Zeeland based Yeoh GH. If you live in Prague you’ll have the chance to see his work at the Skolska 28 Gallery from January 4th to the 15th. Wish I could see it.

PRINT’s regional design annual

I am about to order the PRINT Regional Design Annual Ten-Year Retrospective 1996-2005 DVD. Yay! It has INSPIRATION written all over it! Who has room to store all those design magazines and annuals anyway? I love the fact that the DVD is organized in easily searchable categories such as: Identity/Stationery, Self-Promotion, Posters, Packaging, Ads, Editorial Design, Environmental Graphics, Photography, Illustration, Invitations/Announcements, Annual Reports and Outdoor Ads. And the purchase includes a full year of access to the companion website, offering the same award-winning designs with full search capabilities.

You can order it here.
