Trent Walton on Blogs

“There’s something sacred about reading a blog post on someone else’s site. It’s like visiting a friend’s house for a quick meal ’round the breakfast table. It’s personal — you’re in their space, and the environment is uniquely suited for idea exchange and uninterrupted conversation. In many ways, we should be treating our blogs like our breakfast tables. Be welcoming & gracious when you host, and kind & respectful when visiting.” – Trent Walton

  1. I love this idea, too. I’ve been trying to connect our digital spaces with our physical ones for a while now. Think about how people flow around a living room. A web page should work the same way. Many of the things we do to people online (e.g., pop-ups, annoying ads, hard-to-understand content) we would never consider in real life, in our home. It’d be rude.

  2. I love this, too! I have never thought in those words, exactly, but that’s a good description for the vibe i’m after!

  3. Lovely sentiment! Stopping by from CupofJo’s recommendations/ weekend roundup.

  4. I, like the others here, love this. It makes me pause for a moment to be more thoughtful and appreciative of the environment that I’m creating on my blog. Thank you!

  5. I was just feeling this way today–blogging is a community, but each individual blog is like a sub-community–like a neighborhood or a home. Anyone who reads my blog is welcome in my community, so I appreciate it when ANY of them comment!

  6. What an amazing quote. I love it.

  7. This really does sum up for me why I love reading blogs so much.

  8. I had never thought of it that way but it’s so true. I completely agree with Tricia’s sentiment as well.

  9. people sometimes ask me for advice i’d give to novice bloggers. graciousness is my go-to bit of advice. this bit is excellent. thanks for sharing.

  10. Love the breakfast table analogy.

  11. Holy cow! Trent is an old friend of mine and a fantastic human being. He is so wise and creative, and I am just so psyched to see his words on my favorite blog! You just made my day! And Trent, seriously, well-said. What an inspiring and thought-provoking invitation to treat all people, spaces, and interactions as sacred. I think that idea should be promoted in big letters to all creative communities. Nay, to the world! I’ll start making some billboards. You get some glue.

  12. love this. so often it’s easy to feel disconnected from people on the internet because of the quantity of information and sites. i like this intimate visual.

  13. This was by far the sweetest thing I’ve read about blogging in a very long time. It is exactly how I see blogs and my own blog actually, but I could have never put it better.

  14. Hmmm… disagree.
You can hide behind the internet and portray whoever you want to portray.
It is far more difficult to hide who you truly are when you have people inside your home.
    Quite different, really.

  15. hmm…when the people inside your home intentionally destryoy ur image according to a pre written script then its not really your image is it
