Sorry guys, I don’t know who Tom Shadyac is but he can’t be a biologist. There are plenty of species (not human) that kill prey whenever and where ever they come across it. In fact, anyone who has ever owned a cat will likely have seen their well-fed darling kill a mouse or bird just… because.
And plants are the same. Think about pine trees changing the soil chemistry to suppress the growth of other plants.
Nature takes as much as it can. Species competition just usually keeps things in check.
