WhatTheFont for the iPhone! YAY!!

I have big news! What heFont, the ingenious font recognition app that I use on a regular basis is now available for the iPhone.

With the iPhone version of WhatTheFont you can use the phone’s built-in camera to photograph the text in question (or choose an existing image from your photo albums). The app allows you to crop the image, focusing on only the important parts before uploading. After confirming which characters are used in the image, the app provides a list of possible matching fonts. You can then either e-mail a link to a MyFonts page with more info on that font, or open it up in the iPhone’s built-in Safari web browser.

Download it for free from the App Store.

(thank you nick)

  1. I am almost, ALMOST, embarrassed to be THIS excited about this app… It is SO hard to type while jumping up and down and giggling!!

  2. holy shit

  3. Sweet. Thank you for sharing this.

  4. Excellent, great idea especially that you can take a picture of a font and get the name straight away.

  5. Sounds awesome, this could be enough to justify me getting the iPhone now :) the phone bit will just be a bonus! Greg

  6. Great application, just looking at iPhones now, another reason to get my hand in my pocket!

  7. Damn it! I’m really trying not to “need” an iPhone, but this app is the coolest!
First time to your blog and I really like it.

  8. is this the best invention o 2009?

  9. Just tried it out with an outback gift card and it nailed it! Nice find! As a web designer this will really come in handy!

  10. Hmm, wondering if I’ll be the only one taking pictures of movie credits…

  11. I havent gotten it to work once. What am I doing wrong? I think the problem is that it needs a perfectly dead on shot of the text with good contrast, otherwise it cant single out the letters well enough

  12. I gave it a whirl and it is not that accurate. I am going to continue to try though:(

  13. I tried it with a few different examples and had no luck at all. It’s a great idea though…hopefully there are just some kinks that need to be worked out and it can be fixed with an update. I really want this to work!

  14. this should not be free!

i would have happily paid for this app! its amazing. worked on all of the fonts ive hunted for. and i even tested it with a few obscure ones in my fontbook!

  15. iTunes says “Item Not Available. The item you’ve requested is not currently available in the U.S. store.” Why not?
