Mysterious Letters

Mysterious Letter Project

In April 2009, Lenka Clayton & Michael Crowe sent a personal, handwritten letter to each of the 467 households in the small Irish village of Cushendall. They hoped these unsolicited letters would prompt neighbourly discussion, spreading across the town, promoting community curiosity. The art work consists solely of the discussion between the recipients about what on Earth these letters are, who sent them and why, etc. Mysterious Letters Project.

Will from It’sNiceThat just sent me over the link to this video where Michael and Lenka talk about their art.

(thank you reina)

  1. Reach out and touch somebody. What a beautiful thing.

  2. i had to post this as well – I have been a fan of Lenka’s work since that “People In Order” video she did with people arranged by their ages – she is a genius and after looking at Michael’s work, they’re the perfect team.

  3. love love love love love this project idea. thanks for posting it!

  4. Living near-ish to Cushendall, I find it really funny that they chose this little obscure random place to do such a sweet and thoughtful project. It’s so rural ^_^

I kind of cringed watching the news coverage on their site from BBC NI, full of reports of suspicious old grannies and ‘art experts’ who say that it’s not art at all, haha! Oh well…

Awesome idea…probably the most interesting thing to have ever happened in Cushendall!
