What was Manhattan like 400 years ago, before the first settlers arrived? Designed by Abbott Miller, the new exhibition Mannahatta/Manhattan: A Natural History of New York City at the Museum of the City of New York reconstructs the ecology of the small wooded island originally known as Mannahatta (“island of many hills” as the Lenape Indians called it) before it became one of the most densely built places on earth.
I can *not* wait to see this exhibit, designed by Pentagram.

I saw this after last month’s CreativeMornings. It was unbelievable. I am a huge fan of maps and anything relating to cartography, so I was thrilled to see this exhibit. I really love the juxtaposition between current and past Manhattan. It’s amazing to think of the once dominating lush landscapes long forgotten in the dense modern world. Definitely get up there to see this, you’ll enjoy it greatly!

The most recent issue of National Geographic features “Before New York”, a nicely illustrated article on just this subject. You should check it out, it is very interesting.

Holy crap.
I was in NYC last summer and visited this exhibition for further informations on the history of NYC, which was the subject for my final history exam (aced it, by the way, my mark was 5.5. Yes, I’m Swiss, too. Yay!)
The exhibition was incredible, the guard had to throw me out, I completely forgot the time.
