“Our creativity comes from without, not from within. We are not self-made. We are dependent on one another, and admitting this to ourselves isn’t an embrace of mediocrity and derivativeness. It’s a liberation from our misconceptions, and it’s an incentive to not expect so much from ourselves and to simply begin.”
– Kirby Ferguson
A quote from Kirby’s TED Talk.
Exactly! I’ve always found artist and photographers to be pretentious when saying “I never listen/look at what other people do, I do my own thing and I don’t care everyone else is doing” as if to prove a point of them being unique and justified. But in all honesty, you’d have to be blind and deaf (or live in a cave on a mountain) NOT to hear or see other people’s work as we are surrounded by it. In fact, we get input every single day that could possibly influence or inspire us without even noticing it. Why deny the obvious? Doesn’t make you less talented.
