Urban Swimming in Bern
I must admit the below video about urban swimming in Bern makes me seriously envious of all my friends living in Switzerland. If only we could jump into the East River outside our window.
Would that the Thames was clean enough to swim in! And whilst the Serpentine used to be safe to swim in, I’m not sure it is now… I envy the Swiss that they have governments that care more about people than giving industries the right to pollute!
End of rant ;)
I usually go swimming in the Rhein river; just underneath the river power-station in Rheinau is the best place to go in. It is 4km to Ellikon am Rhein and you can see old bunker / dugouts from the second world war on the way.
A very nice route for river rafting fis from Stein am Rhein to Paradies with lunch-stop at the Diessenhofen camping-site: 16 km.
This is really alot like living in New Braunfels, Tx. Lots of river swimming and tubing. And if you don’t mind crowds, there’s the pretty neat waterpark, Schlitterbaun.
Great thing about Texas is, it’s always warm enough to swim. Sometime’s it’s a little *too* warm as well.
Oh, we do this in Stockholm too! It’s all too lovely – especially after a nights worth of sweaty clubbing you can jump in the waters on your way home… Bright nights have it’s wonders..
Admittedly, it’s not as dramatic as this river though. Wish I was there!
Bastian, living beside the Aare is fine until it floods. Remember 2005 when the Matte was evacuated? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/4176524.stm
I’m happy to live higher up and walk down for my daily swim :-)

In the US you’d call that green-design-swimming, and it would most likely get a huge medallion for being so environmental friendly.

This is normal everyday (Summer) activity in Chicago. One need not look at Europe to find urban swimming in a safe clean environment.

Sweet, now if they could solve that little problem of racist xenophobia, they’d really be on to something.

I’ve only watched swimmers and even a “rope-surfer” in the Aare once, but the beautiful turquoise color is oh so tempting!

I need to learn more languages, because I’m suddenly suspicious that I live in the wrong country.
Bern is definitely on my travel wish list now.
