12 days ago Ecuador experienced a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake, killing over 500 people and leaving thousands of families without a home.
Portoviejo, where my friend Juan Miguel is from, was one of the towns most heavily affected by the earthquake. Marin’s family survived but sadly, some of his friends lost their lives, a family member, or their homes.
One of Marin’s way of helping with the reconstruction efforts is through the sale of his drawing of the map of Ecuador, part of his “Under The Influence” series. The earthquake’s epicenter, near the coastal town of Muisne, is shown in the top left. The date and magnitude of the earthquake appear at the bottom of the lithograph. Hemlock Printers in Vancouver, Canada, generously donated 300 lithographs of Marin’s print and all proceeds from this sale will go help the children of Portoviejo.
Each 18″ x 24″ lithograph, printed on 130lb Coronado stock, is signed, numbered, and shipped (this May) in reinforced tubes.

Here’s the newest release of the mini documentary series InFrame made by Bas Berkhout in collaboration with Format. The subject is Paul Pateman, a London-based graphic artist with a quick wit and strong, simple aesthetic. Beautiful.

This beautiful short film follows one of my all-time favorite visual storytellers, Maira Kalman, as she curates her exhibition “Selects.” The reopening of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum features this collection—an exploration of life, love, joy and loss.
The film traces the story behind one of the exhibition’s highlights: Abraham Lincoln’s pocket watch, restored to tick again for the first time in 150 years. It’s an extraordinary opportunity, Maira observes, to “connect us to history, dreaming and the future.”

The talented and delightful Gael Towey recently started a short film series called Portraits in Creativity in which she documents artists and their inspirations, revealing the courage and curiosity that propel the creative act.
Last night she launched her latest short film on illustrator Maira Kalman. It’s a deep yet humorous glimpse into Maira’s world, a woman I hugely admire. Watch it.

How incredibly wonderful are these blue bird woodcut sculpture prints? They are the brainchild of Nic Annette Miller. They are woodcuts printed onto mulberry paper and individually hand-colored, then glued onto 3/4″ thick plywood, sawed out and sanded. Totally hand-made in Brooklyn.
