When we were toddlers, my mother labeled everything in our house—doors, windows, closets. As we got our clothes, we saw the word “closet.” As we tinkered on the piano, we saw the word “piano.” We absorbed what was part of our daily environment. She’s a teacher, and her philosophy is that if you surround young children with the tools they need to learn, over time, they will simply choose to explore that which surrounds them. And through that exploration, they can acquire vast knowledge.

Eight years ago, Mr. Jiménez, 35, an illegal immigrant working as a gardener in Stuart, Fla., suffered devastating injuries in a car crash with a drunken Floridian. A community hospital saved his life, twice, and, after failing to find a rehabilitation center willing to accept an uninsured patient, kept him as a ward for years at a cost of $1.5 million.
What happened next set the stage for a continuing legal battle with nationwide repercussions: Mr. Jiménez was deported — not by the federal government but by the hospital, Martin Memorial. After winning a state court order that would later be declared invalid, Martin Memorial leased an air ambulance for $30,000 and “forcibly returned him to his home country,” as one hospital administrator described it.

G and I are loving our Sorapot. Joey just informed me about some upcoming designs and the warming cradle had me look. As you can see in the rendering, the stand will complete the circle formed by Sorapot’s arch. There will be a space for a votive candle at the very bottom of the circle that will keep the tea warm when lit, and cast tea-colored mood light. The stand is being handmade from teak in Java, Indonesia, and should be available this fall. Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these.

During my trip to switzerland this summer I bought a gummitwist. My sister and I tried to explain the rules, or what we remembered of it, to G. He just looked at us in disbelief. Can’t wait to show Ella, once she’s old enough….
Here’s a good resource I just found that explains the “Zehner“, in german.
