This Question Stopped Me In My Tracks

Who are you without the doing?” What a powerful and humbling question.

Listen to reflections on this in Jocelyn K. Glei’s latest Hurry Slowly Podcast episode.

“Love after Love”

“The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.”

Derek Walcott

A Good Life

“People matter. Meaning matters. A good life is not a place at which you arrive, it’s a lens through which you see and create your world.”
Jonathan Fields

I See Rivers

Completely enamored with I See Rivers since I saw them perform at the Do Lectures a few weeks ago and I have been listening to their tunes nonstop ever since.

Calamari Will Never Be The Same

The fine folks of This American Life got a tip about a meat plant selling pig intestines as fake calamari. They investigated and now I can never eat Calamari again.

Listen in.

The Feedback Rush

In this Hurrly Slowly episode on Feedback Jocelyn speaks on how criticism constrains creativity, while questions and appreciations help it expand. And, why effective feedback focuses on outcomes, not just opinions.

It made me rethink how I will give feedback going forward. And, it made me apologize to a friend. Thank you Jocelyn! And, Illustration by Yukai Du

Role Models Podcast

I appreciate the intention behind the Role Models Podcast: Interviewing women with inspiring careers so more women feel encouraged to aim higher.

And I am honored I was asked to be on it. Here’s the most recent episode with yours truly.

Thank you David for your thoughtfulness and making this so easy for me. Also, I talk a mile a minute.

All At Sea

This story by Tim FitzHigham, about crossing the English Channel in a bathtub, must be my favorite The Moth story I have ever heard. It is laugh out funny.

Scott Belsky on Decision Making

“When we make a decision, whether it’s good or bad, at least it’s motion. That motion is what moves us forward. Ironically, whether that motion is in the right or wrong direction, at least it’s giving us some better visibility of the terrain around us and helping us learn.”
– Scott Belsky

Mr. Soul On Top

I just listened to this The Moth episode by Christian McBride titled Mr. Soul on Top. He tells the story of him falling in love with James Brown’s music and dreaming of one day performing with him on stage. It is nothing short of moving and incredibly inspiring. I will make my kids listen to this one!

Hurry Slowly

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this conversation between Jocelyn Glei and Jason Fried. It’s the first episode of the podcast called Hurry Slowly, which is all about how you can be more productive, creative, and resilient through the simple act of slowing down. You can subscribe to it in iTunes.

Talk/Guided Meditation with Tara Brach

A few years back my friend Maria of Brain Pickings pointed me to Tara Brach’s guided meditations. They have carried me through some difficult times and I can’t thank Tara enough for so generously offering these podcasts for free. This morning, I listened to the above talk on relaxing the over-controller and it really hit home. Watch the talk and then enjoy the guided meditation at the end. It’s just what I needed. Maybe some of you do too…

Sounds of NYC

My studiomate Gabe just launched Sounds of NYC in collaboration with Breather (a service I LOVE). So simple. So lovely.
