Seventy-five year old Ruben Pardo is the oldest elevator manual operator in Los Angeles. For six days a week over the past 40 years, he has helped the patrons of the Art Deco marvel at 5514 Wilshire Blvd “up and down” while enlightening them with positive musings on the simple joys of life. Congrats on 40 years Ruben!

Ego is stolen. Confidence is earned.

“When we remove ego, we’re left with what is real. What replaces ego is humility, yes—but rock-hard humility and confidence. Whereas ego is artificial, this type of confidence can hold weight. Ego is stolen. Confidence is earned.”
– Ryan Holiday, Ego is the Enemy

We so totally need this reversible dishwasher sign at work! Only problem, our dishwasher is not magnetic.

Christoph Niemann Tattly

Tattly by Christoph Riemann

My favorite perk of running Tattly is that I get to collaborate with talented individuals like Christoph Niemann. Yesterday, we launched a new set with his designs, it’s called The Petting Zoo. And my kids are crazy for them.

I am a huge admirer of Christoph’s work. You might have seen his New York Covers, his Books or maybe you’ve watched his CreativeMornings talk.

And now you can wear more of his art on your skin. Enjoy!

The first secret of design is … noticing

As human beings, we get used to “the way things are” really fast. But for designers, the way things are is an opportunity … Could things be better? How? In this funny, breezy talk, Tony Fadell, the man behind the iPod and the Nest thermostat shares some of his tips for noticing — and driving — change.

Leave it to the always inspiring Swiss Riklin Brothers, to reinvent the concept of what makes a hotel room: No real estate, no walls and no roof. Null Stern Hotel simply an open air double bed, available for reservations. What’s not to love?

Love and Self-Love

Alain de Botton says that one of the oddest things we need in order to love is a vital ingredient known as self-love.

The Capacity To Be Alone

“The capacity to be alone is the capacity to love. It may look paradoxical to you, but it’s not. It is an existential truth: only those people who are capable of being alone are capable of love, of sharing, of going into the deepest core of another person–without possessing the other, without becoming dependent on the other, without reducing the other to a thing, and without becoming addicted to the other. They allow the other absolute freedom, because they know that if the other leaves, they will be as happy as they are now. Their happiness cannot be taken by the other, because it is not given by the other.”

Things I Didn’t Buy

Things I didn't Buy

I recently started keeping a list of “Things I Didn’t Buy“. It’s refreshing to look back at it and realize how much money I saved and how many of these items would have just become “stuff” in a very short time. Marie Kondo-ing my life last year was one of the best things I have done in a long time and it keeps having a positive effect on my life (and finances). If you are not familiar with her book “The life-changing magic of tiding up“, look it up. But be warned, you might start talking to your socks.

Momentum

“Never sacrifice momentum. I might know a better path, but if we’ve got a lot of momentum, if everyone’s united and they’re marching together and the path is O.K., just go with the flow. I may eventually nudge them down a new path, but never stop the troops mid march.”
