spock – vertical search

Spock1

The only kind of search result that you get from Spock is a list of people; and it interprets any query as if it is about people. So whether you search for democrats or ruby on rails or new york, the results will be lists of people associated with the query. In that sense, the algorithm is probably a flavor of the page rank or frequency analysis algorithm used by Google – but tailored to people.

InUmbra

Inumbra_08

InUmbra, a creation by Dirk Wynants made me look. What a beautiful approach to a parasol/table combination. I love it how all technical parts that open and close the screen are above InUmbra’s UV resistant fabric and consequently are not visible when seated under the parasol.

Floater – a different kind of notebook stand

Floater_15_1

If you connect your notebook computer to a large screen, at work or home, Floater is for you. Close your MacBook pro, connect a keyboard, a screen and a mouse, and you have created a perfect working environment. The Floater is machined from a single block of aluminum, which lends it great stability and optimum cooling power by spreading the heat around. The two small panels around your computer are of minimal height and width, but sufficient to meet the product’s two requirements; to hold your computer perfectly, and to let you set it up as easily as possible.

Floater. A cool idea, pricy though.

Skip Hop Playspot

Playspot

Playspot by Skip Hop is a new soft surface playmat. They are made from soft EVA foam and the interlocking shapes allow to create a mat to your room’s dimensions. I am so glad to finally see an alternative to the primary colored alphabet playmats. Too bad Ella is already over this, otherwise I would have definitely pre-ordered a set at Amazon. (Shipping in early August.)

Font smoothing, anti-aliasing, and sub-pixel rendering

Apple and Microsoft have always disagreed in how to display fonts on computer displays. Today, both companies are using sub-pixel rendering to coax sharper-looking fonts out of typical low resolution screens. Where they differ is in philosophy.

Apple generally believes that the goal of the algorithm should be to preserve the design of the typeface as much as possible, even at the cost of a little bit of blurriness.

Microsoft generally believes that the shape of each letter should be hammered into pixel boundaries to prevent blur and improve readability, even at the cost of not being true to the typeface.

alien abduction lamp

Abductionlamp_cow_ill_500x5

Not sure how I would explain this Alien Abduction Lamp to my daughter but it dfinitely made me smile. As much as I love living in NYC, I do miss seeing cows outside my window. Growing up, I would hear their cowbells in the morning, when waking up. No kidding, cows really wear cowbells in Switzerland.

get a handle on your laptop

Laptopstand

This laptop handle by case-mate looks really practical. I wonder though if it gets in the way when you want to put your laptop in a bag or laptop sleeve. A big plus is that it doubles as a passive heat sink with fins, promoting better airflow, which allows your laptop to run cooler. The handle-it is attatched via the original screws from your laptop. You simply remove the four screws with the screwdriver provided, position the handle-it in place, and screw the screws back in.

How to hire the best people you’ve ever worked with

How to hire the best people you’ve ever worked with.

Not that I have hired anyone in the past, but I would look out for the mentioned qualities and attributes as well. And I especially agree with the ending statement: Finally, although this goes without saying: value the hell out of the great people you do have on your team. Given all of the above, they are incredibly special people.

key rings

Familyoffinecars

I don’t know about you, but I tend to get really attached to places I live in. I remember how sad I was to leave my first own Brooklyn apartment, or my amazing little pad in Munich. To me it always feels like I am leaving a part of myself behind.

While perusing Kiel Mead’s jewelery site I had an idea for a parting souvenir: Have your old housekey made into a ring. Not sure if Kiel would do a custom order, but I just thought that might be a cool way of saying goodbye to an old place. Check out the KeyRings collection.

knot around your finger

Forgetmenot

Tying a knot around one’s finger has always served as a reminder of an important task. And in a lovely twist of tradition, these 14 karat gold and sterling silver Forget Me Knot rings designed by Brooklyn-based Kiel Mead serve as permanent reflections and a celebration of memories.

I think I might have posted about these a while back. I just love them so much, I think they’re worth a repost. Forget Me Not Ringicon

Quote of the day : Noah Brier

I’m trying to write an article for a magazine right now and I’m realizing how hard it is after blogging for a while. Because I can’t use hyperlinks to give people credit I just keep thinking that I’m pretending to have come up with other people’s ideas. I don’t like that. Blogging seems much more honest.
