How Things Work

1551. Upon removing a cup of coffee I’d heated for one minute in a microwave oven, I noticed a small ant running about, apparently unharmed. Curious, I gave it another one minute ride and when the door was open, it was still running about. How come an ant is apparently unharmed after two minutes in a microwave? — KMB

Here the answer at How Things Work.

Stina Persson + my mom

Stinapersson_bag_2

My mom runs a high-end womens fashion store in St.Gallen, Switzerland, and asked me to design a sturdy, reusable bag for her business. I looked at my mom and said, “Sure, but only if we come up with something cool, not ‘just’ your logo on it!” She agreed. I boldly approached Stina Persson, one of my alltime favorite illustrators and asked if she’d considered licensing one of her pieces. To be very honest, I was pretty sure she’d say no or that we could simply not afford an illustrator of her class. But how incredibly cool is she? She agreed! So, here is the final product. (My mom’s store information is in the side fold, visible to people walking behind or in front of someone carrying the bag!)

Protect your lunch with Anti-Theft Lunch Bags , which are regular sandwich bags that have green splotches printed on both sides. After your sandwich is placed inside, no one will want to touch it. Hilarious! Made my (surfing) day!)

schtock.com

Picture_24

Anonymous works at a major stock photo company cataloging images. The majority of the stuff he works with will never see the light of day for no other reason than that most people don’t know it’s available to them. It’s a shame which he’s trying to remedy with schtock.com. As an amateur (???) designer, he occasionally can’t help but play around with the images he sees floating across his desk on a daily basis. (All the images you see on his site site were created with the preview thumbnails that anyone can access.)

I can’t shake the feeling but think that this will end up being a guerilla marketing campaign for one of the big stock photography sites. No?

a question for my readers…

Room

Do you have a room for rent or know of someone who does, in the NYC area, preferably Brooklyn? I have a new designer join our team here at swissmiss studio mid october and I am trying to find him a room in a share. If you have any leads, please email me. Alain is a fabulous, clean, kind, considerate guy. I completely vouch for him!

Sumo Bean Bag

Sumo

A few days ago we were lucky to welcome a white SUMO Omni into our family (yes, it’s big, it counts as another family member). Ella is completely gaga over it! It is now her favorite, jumping, sliding and lounging object. G and I tested its lounging capabilities for two grown-ups as well and our verdict: Totally comfortable! At this point, I just say “SUMO?” and Ella starts cheering and says YES YES YES! Now if that’s not a happy product owner, I don’t know what is! Thank you Andrew! We love our SUMO!

Calder Le Cirque (1/2)

Carlos Vilardebo’s 1961 film of Alexander Calder’s “circus,” an intricately assembled performance piece played out by handmade characters including jugglers, sword swallowers, clowns, and animals. These figures, crafted from a collection of “cork, wire, wood, yarn, paper, string, and cloth,” were each assigned a series of movements and manipulated by the artist to perform specific circus acts. With performances held at various locations in Paris and New York through the mid 1930s, Calder’s circus helped to establish him in avante-garde circles. Jean Cocteau, Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian, Le Corbusier, Thomas Wolfe, and André Kertész were among those who saw the celebrated Cirque Calder over the years.

Globo Logos

Globo Logos, by Julien Vallée, was created for the Earth Day. A ode to the work of Jacques Languirand. The piece aims to bring purity and dignity back to the ideation process by creating a space where ideas can live and evolve, independent of those who would use them for political or commercial ends.

AirBed&Breakfast | Forget Hotels

Picture_18

Here’s an update to a site I’ve mentioned before: AirBed&Breakfast. Joe sent me a note saying that they now officially launched. Hooray! I just had a look and am impressed with what I saw! Obviously their community is growing fast, with places to stay in over 350 cities in 56 countries all around the world! The new site allows secure online payments via PayPal or credit card, user profiles, the ability to book a room in 3 clicks. They were recently picked up by CNN, NY Times, WSJ, and PSFK. The first peer-to-peer travel site is doing well even in my own neighborhood – they are about to surpass 100 listings in NYC/Brooklyn. What a fabulous resource! Save money when traveling to NYC or make money as a host when you’re home… Check it out!
