destroy flickr

Destroyflickr

One of the projects, Destroy Flickr, that I was judging at the 2008 Adobe Achievement Awards last friday, had all of us interactive judges jump up and say “Fantastic! Where can I download it?!” I had to keep telling myself hat this was STUDENT work! Wow!

DestroyFlickr explores alternative methods for viewing and sharing Flickr content. Its user interface provides an environment that benefits photos rather than hindering them. With the ability to look at a photo on a dark, neutral background, you can view it without the interference of a brighter surrounding. By using workspaces and canvases, DestroyFlickr is able to retain a constant history of where you have navigated, offering the ability to revisit an area without the need to reload the entire page. DestroyFlickr takes advantage of features provided by the Adobe AIR SDK that are unavailable to web-based RIAs. With the support of both drag and drop uploading and downloading, posting and saving photos is done in one easy motion. Now you can download the highest resolution version of a photo without having to see it first—just drag a thumbnail to the download menu and the download begins.

Download it here: Destroy Flickr (the name really bugs me though, ‘enhance flickr’ would be much more appropriate)

Your Flickr Experience will never be the same! Hat tip and thank you Jonnie Hallman!

gigantic soccer statues in zurich train station

The_football_statues_zurich_switzer

The most remarkable thing about these statues is not that one of them has no buttocks, nor that they are about 10 meters tall. Most interesting is the fact that it was actually claimed by the two rent-a-cops (pictured in this panorama) that photography of these statues was illegal….because the images of these statues belong to Adidas and no one else (never mind the dozens of mobile phone cameras snapping away, to our left and right.) Oh dear… Well, after a short scuffle with these two security guards, some real police came, who obviously knew better than to restrict a harmless activity in a public place. Thank you, Swiss police, for protecting me from these bone-headed ‘security guards’.” (Marco, a reader, sent me this in an email, don’t know who wrote it originally)

‘Uncreative Writer’ Retypes the ‘New York Times’

He typed an entire issue of the New York Times into an 840-page book called Day. He recently completed a trilogy, The Weather, Traffic and Sports. They are transcriptions of a year of radio weather reports, a 24-hour traffic cycle and the radio broadcast of a Yankees game. Ums, uhs and ads included.

end. (of the week)

The_end_microwave

The above image (by david ray carson) had me chuckle. It’s the perfect image to end this week’s posts. No post’s tomorrow as I won’t be in front of my computer all day. I have the honor to be one of the judges at the 2008 Adobe Design Achievement Awards. YAY!

Happy weekend everyone!

He Came With the Couch, by David Slonim

He came with the couch” made me laugh out loud, Ella looking at me with big eyes, not exactly sure what just happened. I truly love David Slonim’s illustration style and sense of humor.

A strangely shaped, plush blue fellow with suspenders is attached to Sophie’s family’s new couch. It seems like absolutely nothing will remove him, not even a boisterous bagpipe performance–not even the plunger! The family consults with the doctor, who says that he needs to get out more, so the entire family takes the couch and its permanent passenger to the Grand Canyon, the beach, and Washington, DC. Will any of these exotic locales get him off the couch?

The page with ‘him and the couch’ at the beach was definitely Ella’s favorite, as she’s completely beach-obsessed these days. I just hope she won’t ask us to bring our couch next time we head to the water…

Can you tell I love LookyBook?

Fiction: The Google Apocalypse

Nzzfoliogoogle

Bruno Giussani has written a short fiction, situated in 2013, speculating about what would happen if everything that Google knows, and could conceivably know, about the users of its services became public. It’s in German, it’s inspired by one of his past blog post, and it is published in the newest issue of NZZ Folio, the very sharp magazine of the Neue Zürcher Zeitungfull summary here, the issue is devoted to the Internet. (drawing by Anna-Lina Balke)

Apparently there will be an English Version at some point. Keep us posted Bruno!

Plainview – a fabulous fullscreen browser

Picture_10

Plainview is a fullscreen browser without any Chrome at all specially made for presentations. As Rick explains in the blog post about it, “How many times had we done presentations where we just wanted to show our work in a browser – screw powerpoint – but couldn’t do it because it would look lame with all that browser chrome? How many pointless Powerpoint presentations have we made of Quicktime movies of our sites, just so we could show them in full screen and look slick?”

The above is a screenshot of swissmiss fullscreen. I have discovered a whole new browser-window-less surfing pleasure. Wheee! Get Plainview.

More and more Americans are homeschooling their children in the belief that they will become better prepared for life by learning at home rather than at public school. Here’s a look at four families who have turned their homes into classrooms.

issuu – you publish

Picture_5

Issuu is the place for online publications: Magazines, catalogs, documents, and stuff you’d normally find on print. It’s the place where YOU become the publisher: Upload a document, it’s fast, easy, and totally FREE. Find and comment on thousands of great publications. Join a living library, where anyone finds publications about anything and share them with friends.

This service is fantastic and completely making my day! Hoooray! What a fabulous way to present one’s portfolio?! It even let’s you embedd the code. The illustration portfolio above is from odavalle and what you’re seeing above is a screenshot of the ‘fullscreen’ view. Fantastic!

Also, I might have to upload my thesis book project.
